Saramago's Vanity is a pictorial poem produced in 1998 as a limited edition artist's bookwork. The text was constructed from an interview between Juan Cruz and the Portuguese writer Jose Saramago. The work is in 4 parts. Part I is reproduced here. The complete Text reads: I would probably not reflect, if it's all the same ~ we are all more or less ~ the letter speaks of having small fames. Only a question of what you say ~ everything is precarious ~ you are condemned. All will be lost in oblivion ~ you have to shut up, disappear like so many others. The why of each one of us is real ~ vanity is fragile ~ the acrobat will fall. |
